چکیده

We report here on the first measurements of N34S in small (6 10 mg) samples of ancient bone collagen extracted from humans (n = 23) and animals (n = 4) from various European archaeological sites. Measurement of N34S values complement collagen N13C and N15N measurements and can provide corroboratory palaeodietary insights or new locality information. In areas where there are clear N34S differences between marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems they can be used to infer the consumption of foods from these systems. Also, as collagen N34S values reflect local environment N34S values, they can be used to identify the region where an individual normally resides, and therefore identify migratory individuals. Modern animal bone collagen N34S values were also measured (n = 7) and it was observed that such values may be confounded by modern sulphur pollutants, and we propose that archaeological material, which is free from modern sulphur pollutants, would provide appropriate baseline material for ecosystem studies. ß 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Isotopic palaeodiet studies of Ancient Egyptian fauna and humans

We report here stable carbon and nitrogen isotope results from human and faunal bone collagen from samples taken from sites in the Egyptian Nile Valley and surrounding region, dating from the Predynastic (c. 5500 BC) through to the Dynastic (c. 343 BC) periods. Isotopic values for the human population cluster together across this broad time range, with high dN ratios, and dC values indicating a...

Age-related Variation in Isotopic Indicators of Diet at Medieval Kulubnarti, Sudanese Nubia

This study compares trends in dietary composition in two large cemetery populations from the site of Kulubnarti (AD 550–800) in Sudanese Nubia. Bone collagen and bone apatite carbonate were analysed to characterise stable carbon, nitrogen and oxygen isotopes. Previous research on these cemeteries has suggestedmarked differences in nutritional status and health between the populations. Contrary ...

Provenancing Archaeological Wool Textiles from Medieval Northern Europe by Light Stable Isotope Analysis (δ13C, δ15N, δ2H)

We investigate the origin of archaeological wool textiles preserved by anoxic waterlogging from seven medieval archaeological deposits in north-western Europe (c. 700-1600 AD), using geospatial patterning in carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) and non-exchangeable hydrogen (δ2H) composition of modern and ancient sheep proteins. δ13C, δ15N and δ2H values from archaeological wool keratin (n = 83) and ...

Study of Preservation Status and Dietary Reconstruction in Human Remains Recovered from Roopkund Lake through Chemical Analysis of Faunal Remains

The Present study carried out on the bone samples collected from Roopkund Lake in Chamoli Garhwal, Uttarakhand, which is located 5029 meters from main sea level in between Nanda Ghunghti and Trishuli peak. This historical site belongs to the 9th century A.D.  All the samples selected for the study were dried in room temperature, as well as in hot air ovens at 32 degree Celsius. The Cleaning, pr...

Carnivore-specific stable isotope variables and variation in the foraging ecology of modern and ancient wolf populations: case studies from Isle Royale, Minnesota, and La Brea

We use carbon and nitrogen isotope data collected from two North American gray wolf (Canis lupus L., 1758) populations (Isle Royale and northern Minnesota) to both calculate carnivore-specific isotopic variables and investigate wolf foraging ecology. The isotopic enrichments of 13C and 15N that occur between mammalian carnivores and their prey have not been well defined in modern populations. W...
